Suzy Poling grapples with the worlds of documentation and installation in work that discusses the complexities and ambiguities of escapism, fixed reality, abandonment and the psychological embodiment of place. She researches and photographs places she finds perplexing, bringing in objects and arranging scenarios in response to these spaces. Poling treats each photograph as a staged scene enveloping the viewer with intense color, humor and discomfort. The artist received her BA from Columbia College of Chicago and has worked as both a photography instructor and a freelance photographer. Her work has been featured at the Chicago Cultural Center, Art Chicago, the Carrie Secrist Gallery and the Evanston Art Center as well as in shows across the country. Poling's freelance photographs have appeared in such publications as Chicago Magazine, Esquire, Seventeen, Jane, the Village Voice and Art and Auction.
